Twelve

Simon ran into the arcade with abandon. His adrenaline was pumping, and he was prepared to fight his way through whatever he found inside. The interior was dark, without even the glow of the arcade game screens.

Simon pulled the fire alarm. Instead of triggering an alarm, the exterior metal shutter slammed down so hard it would have split someone in half if they’d been unlucky enough to be standing under it.

“No intruders detected,” a computerized voice announced.

“Dammit!” Simon yelled.

He punched the side of the nearest arcade cabinet, splintering the wood, and ran up the narrow spiral stairs to the manager’s office.

“Computer, playback the most recent intrusion.”

“No recent intrusion detected.”

“Play back the most recent exit,” Simon commanded the computer.

On the monitor, he saw Amanda walking out of the arcade by herself.

“Dammit!” Simon yelled again. He’d given Amanda explicit instructions to keep her safe, and she’d chosen to ignore them. “Bring up current location: Amanda Khan.”

“Tracker offline,” the computerized voice came back.

Simon ran his hand through his hair, tugging when he reached the end. The small tracking device was nearly undetectable, even if you knew what to look for. It was also virtually indestructible, with multiple fail-safes. They didn’t go offline on their own.

“Show last recorded location,” Simon said.

The computer displayed a map of the city with a crosshair over Amanda Khan’s last known location. Next to a series of coordinates, a background service displayed relevant information it pulled from an internet search on the coordinates. Amongst the stream of information, one piece of information stuck out.

The Receptive owned the building.

Simon stood at the desk, racking his brain for options. Amanda was gone, taken. If they were clever enough to find his tracking device on her hoodie, they wouldn’t keep her in her last known location for long.

Simon was barely any closer to finding his device or Lily, and now the same people had possibly taken Amanda as well.

The time for half measures was over.

If Simon was going to find Amanda before it was too late, he would have to do it the most efficient way he knew how, regardless of the consequences.
